Ballet, Hip Hop, or Contemporary? Choosing Your Child's First Class

By Priya Anand · June 30, 2026

When a parent asks which class is right for their child, our honest answer is usually: the one they will be excited to come back to. But the disciplines really do develop different things, and matching the class to your kid's temperament makes a real difference in that first term.

Foundation Ballet is the strongest technical base a young dancer can build. It develops posture, coordination, focus, and body awareness that transfer to every other style, and to sports, honestly. It suits children who enjoy structure and can settle into a routine. We start dancers as young as three in Creative Movement and move into graded ballet from age five.

Urban Hip Hop tends to click with kids who have energy to burn and love music. It is expressive, high-tempo, and social, and it builds rhythm and confidence quickly. For a shy child, the group energy of a hip hop room can be a wonderful way in; for a high-energy child, it is a productive outlet.

Contemporary is best a little later, usually from age eleven, once a dancer has some ballet or movement foundation to draw on. It rewards creativity and emotional expression. If you are still unsure, book a free trial in whichever class sparks the most interest, and remember that many of our students eventually take two or three.
